We’ve all been there. You’re shopping for something you need, whether its clothing, shoes, a new car or appliances and you come across a price tag so big that you wonder why this item would ever be this expensive. These items are usually labelled as luxury or premium and can seem really expensive for no reason. Maybe it’s the brand name, or where it’s made you wonder?
Well we don’t have the answers for everything, but we’ve explored some of our luxury appliance brands and broken down why they are considered luxury and what the reasoning is behind the pricier price-tag.
La Cornue
La Cornue could be easily labelled as one of the most expensive appliance brands in the world. One of their latest limited-edition ranges sold for over $800,000 CAD. Now that can feel a bit extreme even to us experts, but their more approachable line can vary from $8,000 to $20,000 and beyond.
La Cornue is a French appliance brand, started in 1908 by Albert Dupuy. Each appliance is hand- built and crafted in France by master artisans. Each appliance is created using high-quality copper, stainless steel and brass, as a result some units can weigh over 600lbs. The paint finish is done carefully and with the same craftmanship as a luxury sports car. The paint is sealed with a lacquer gloss and hand polished to ensure absolute perfection.
For their more premium Château Collection; the configuration, colour and finish options allow for over 8,000 customizable possibilities – ensuring that each range is tailor-made for you and your kitchen. It’s a truly customized, luxurious experience – made to set your range far apart from the rest.
Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero is a more commonly found appliance brand in North America. It is definitely of the luxury category but can be far more affordable than the hand-crafted La Cornue.
Sub-Zero was started by Westye Bakke in 1945 after he tried to find a better way to store his sons diabetes medication. He created Subzero Freezer Company which would be the first system to preserve food at ultra-low (sub zero) temperatures. The Sub-Zero appliances are still built in American facilities ensuring the use of premium grade materials, state-of-the-art technology and the highest caliber craftmanship.
The refrigerators are built with two different cooling systems, to ensure food stays fresher longer and frozen food is preserved longer. The air filtration system was inspired by NASA technology which is designed to scrub the air of ethylene gas which causes faster food spoilage. The door seals are also so secure that even during multiple day power outages there were no reports of food spoilage at all.
Though these two brands are significantly different from each other in origin, design and style they have a few things in common that land them in the ‘luxury’ appliance category:
Appliance brands like La Cornue, Sub Zero& Wolf, Miele, Dacor and Smeg are all developed with these key aspects in mind. These appliances are built not only with high quality materials, typically from their country of origin, but they are also built with integrity and reliability. It’s not always about the latest gadgets or fun accessories, but about thoughtful manufacturing.
We’re not saying any brands outside of these are not luxury, nor do we think these brands always rise above the rest. We simply wanted to illustrate why luxury appliance brands are given this designation and what goes on behind the scenes that causes a higher price tag.
